Performance Analysis

There are no issues to report on the 12V rail, which is perfectly stable all the way up to full load. SilverStone promised that it would be within 3 percent of the nominal value, but our figures showed this was a conservative figure as we never saw deviation of more than 1.5 percent. That said, in each test the EVGA SuperNOVA 850 P2 (another Platinum rated power supply that we tested for comparison) was even closer to 12V.

80 Plus Platinum PSUs are all about efficiency, and the ST75F-PT delivers here too, never dropping below 90 percent in the standard load tests and averaging just over 92 percent. Its weakest performance was at 200W where it's no better than a number of Gold rated PSUs, but in each other test it's higher, and it's at its best at around 50 percent load – in the 400W test it hits 94.15 percent efficiency. However, despite its good figures the EVGA unit is still better, and the same is true in the low load tests.

The ripple values are great – even at full load, there's less than 30mV. Even so, that EVGA PSU won't be beaten.

As mentioned, in most idle situations you won't hear the fan at all as it will be off. At 400W, it does spin up, but only rather gently. At maximum load, however, it is much more audible, which isn't surprising given the size of the unit. As you also may have guessed, the EVGA 850 P2 is quieter, but it does have the benefit of a larger chassis and fan.

Conclusion

The results from the EVGA PSU show that SilverStone has sacrificed ultimate electrical performance in order to fit the 140mm ATX form factor, but that's not to say the electrical performance is bad – it's still remarkably good. There are better 80 Plus Platinum power supplies out there then, but the ST75F-PT is decent value given its rating. That said, you can buy solid 750W PSUs for a lot less if you sacrifice a bit of efficiency. Overall, this is a great PSU, though its unique selling point and relatively high price means it only makes the most sense for high-end, small form factor builds. We'd also like to see SilverStone give a more generous warranty (Update 12/08/2016: it has now been extended from three years to five years), and a higher operating temperature would also have been nice.
